Three quick checks

Did you claim every credit you were entitled to? Rent Tax Credit, health expenses and remote working relief are the ones most often missed.
Did you start, change or leave a job during the year? Emergency tax or a week 1 basis often leaves tax overpaid.
Did you work only part of the year? Annual credits may not have been fully used by payroll.

The four-year window

You can review any of the last four tax years. In 2026 that is 2022 to 2025, and 2022 closes on 31 December 2026. Each year is reviewed separately using that year's rates.

Use the estimator first

The estimator recomputes the year from your pay, tax paid and the credits you can add, and tells you whether a review is worth your time. It is indicative; Revenue decides.

Pitfalls

A Preliminary End of Year Statement is not a refund. It changes once you add credits or other income.
Unused credits do not become cash. A refund only arises where tax was actually deducted.
