Tax refunds

PAYE tax refund: are you due tax back?

If you are a PAYE employee or pension recipient, a refund usually comes from credits and reliefs you never claimed. Here is how to check, estimate and claim for free, for any of the last four years.

Written by PAYEWise editorial team, plain-English tax writers working from Revenue sources. Tax review: pending appointment of a named tax-qualified reviewer. Reviewed 28 October 2026.

Quick answer: Revenue reviews a tax year only when you ask. Sign in to myAccount, request a Statement of Liability for the year, and add any credits or reliefs you missed in the Income Tax Return. If you overpaid, Revenue pays the refund to your own bank account. You can go back four years: in 2026 that means 2022 to 2025, and 2022 closes on 31 December 2026.

Seven-question eligibility triage

If you answer yes to any of these, it is worth a review:

  1. Did you pay rent in the year without claiming the Rent Tax Credit?
  2. Did you pay doctor, consultant, prescription or non-routine dental costs?
  3. Did you work from home on some days and pay your own bills?
  4. Did you start a new job, change jobs or have a gap in employment?
  5. Did you pay tuition fees or a student contribution for yourself or a child?
  6. Do you support an elderly or incapacitated relative, or care for a dependent person at home?
  7. Is your occupation on Revenue's flat rate expenses list and is the allowance missing from your certificate?

Choose the year

Historical years (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025) are reviewed through the Income Tax Return and result in a Statement of Liability. For the current year (2026) you can only adjust your credits now; the year-end review becomes available after 31 December. Use the deadline checker to confirm the last date for each year.

Estimate, do not assume

A refund is not the sum of credit face values. Revenue recomputes the whole year: your income, bands, every credit, tax already paid, and USC separately. The PAYE refund estimator follows the same approach and shows a possible additional tax saving with a range. Treat it as a guide to whether a review is worthwhile.

Income Tax credits versus USC refunds

Credits reduce Income Tax only. A USC refund arises only when USC itself was over-deducted, for example when your total income was at or below the exemption threshold.

Refund agents and the 2026 rules

Since 1 January 2026 Revenue no longer operates the older A2 process that let agents receive PAYE refunds on a client’s behalf. Refunds are paid into the taxpayer’s own account. Agents may still help you file through authorised routes, but a service that takes a percentage by receiving the refund first is incompatible with the current process. Claiming yourself is free.
